The Acadiana Amateur Baseball
League is an 18 and over men’s baseball league based out of Lafayette,
Louisiana. The league was started by Joey Caillier in 1998 and that first year
featured six teams throughout the Acadiana area. The number of teams has
fluctuated since then but the competition has consistently grown. The league now
features eight teams comprised of players from throughout south Louisiana, but
still predominantly Acadiana area players. The skill level of players varies
from some who’ve played little organized baseball to those who have enjoyed
success at higher levels such as college or professional. But the one common
element is everyone’s love of the game and enthusiasm to still be playing “real”
baseball.
Games are mostly played at
Acadiana High and Lafayette High, both in Lafayette, Westminster Christian
Academy in Bellevue, and Fabacher Field in Broussard. The cost to participate in
the league varies from team to team but usually averages about $100 per player
for the season. However, some teams get sponsors which help offset some of the
costs of playing.
The 2007 season will begin in
early April and conclude in late July. The regular season is usually 15 games
plus the two week single elimination playoffs. The league also hosts an annual
All-Star Sunday the week of the Fourth of July that features a Home Run Derby
and All-Star Game.
For those interested in playing,
there is an open tryout prior to each season. Check the website for more
information as the season draws near for registration information.
